“One thing we know for certain about dyslexia is that this is one small area of difficulty in a sea of strengths.”

Meet the Dyslexia Specialist
Howdy! My name is Andrea Posson. I am the Dyslexia & Academic Literacy Specialist and owner of Discover Literacy Services LLC. A married mom of two, I am a graduate of Texas A&M University and reside in San Antonio, Texas. In 2021, my son was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia. I know firsthand the angst and worry associated with watching your child struggle to learn to read, write, and spell. Literacy is the foundation for all educational success. To struggle here is to struggle in all realms of academia. Living this out with my son is what inspired me to leave my accounting job of eleven years to become a Certified Academic Literacy Therapist (CALT) to help families and students navigate this diagnosis and become awesome readers! I am currently enrolled in the Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program (DSPP) through Neuhaus Education Center located in Houston, Texas. Though not fully certified yet (the process takes around 5 years), I have mastered all coursework required to administer Reading Readiness and Basic Language Skills curricula to students with dyslexia and/or other language based disorders.
About Dyslexia
DYSLEXIA DEFINED
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is marked by unexpected difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, spelling, and decoding despite intelligence, motivation, and education. The cause of these difficulties are deficits in the phonological components of language: phonological awareness, phonological memory, and rapid naming.
BUSTING THE MYTH
People with dyslexia are NOT unusually prone to seeing letters or words backward. The deficit responsible for the disorder is phonological in nature. The problem is linguistic, not visual. Typical readers convert letters to their sounds and appreciate that the words are composed of smaller segments or phonemes. Dyslexic children and adults have difficulty in developing an awareness that spoken and written words are composed of these phonemes. People who are dyslexic perceive words as amorphous blurs failing to appreciate their segmental nature and internal sound structure.
NOT SO RARE
Data from the Connecticut Longitudinal Study indicates that dyslexia affects approximately one in five children. Girls are just as likely to have dyslexia as boys. The key to reading success is early detection and intervention. If your child is struggling, have them tested. Once a diagnosis of dyslexia is confirmed, it is important to seek intervention services as quickly as possible. Reading disabilities diagnosed after third grade are often extremely difficult to remediate. The sooner the better!

Curricula used
Both evidence based, systematic, and explicit literacy programs, Reading Readiness and Basic Language Skills curricula are designed to provide effective therapy for students with dyslexia, other language based disorders, and those developing and beginning readers. Reading Readiness is intended for Pre-Kindergarten through 1st grade students. Basic Language Skills is intended for students 2nd grade and up. Which program and at what pace is best for your child will be determined after a Mastery Check is completed at the time of consultation. All students follow the same curriculum; however, therapy is tailored to each child’s individual areas of struggle.
program requirements
At LEAST 180 minutes of instruction per week is required to participate in therapy sessions. This is equivalent to three days/week given in one hour sessions. This amount of time has been scientifically proven to be the minimum requirement for dyslexia therapy to be effective in remediation. And this is true no matter which curriculum is administered. Services are offered up to five days/week.
pricing
Individual Therapy: $60/one hour session + a one-time materials fee of $50 due before beginning therapy.
